Hirosuke Watanbe and Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Sgt. 1st Class Yasuyuki Iwashita inspect radio equipment July 5, 2013, at Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti. During their deployments, U.S. and Japanese service members developed an emergency communications system and tested their radio equipment to ensure the gear was compatible. Sweet was a signals systems operator with the 1st Battalion, 63rd Armor Regiment, 2nd Armor Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division. Watanbe and Iwashita were assigned to the Japan Self-Defense Force Deployment Air Force for Counterpiracy Enforcement unit, a Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa coalition partner.
