During their deployments, U.S. and Japanese service members developed an emergency communications system and tested their radio equipment to ensure the gear was compatible. Sweet was a signals systems operator with the 1st Battalion, 63rd Armor Regiment, 2nd Armor Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division. Watanbe and Iwashita were assigned to the Japan Self-Defense Force Deployment Air Force for Counterpiracy Enforcement unit, a Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa coalition partner.
