Pvt. 1st Class Innocent Hirwa receives a program and information for a naturalization ceremony on June 5, 2026, at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services field office in South Portland. Hirwa is one of four Maine National Guardsmen to take the Oath of Allegiance and officially become a United States citizen. Hirwa already serves in the Maine Army National Guard, attached to the 488th Military Police Company. Originally from Rwanda, Hirwa said, "I moved to the United States and Maine for family reunification, which eventually led me to join the National Guard. The road to citizenship was a long... journey, and I am very grateful to the Army for the assistance provided along the way."
