Lower water levels during the season on Lake Okeechobee expose shallow flats and feeding areas for a variety of birds, some taking flight and others feeding in the receding water under partly cloudy skies. The lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the United States, is naturally shallow, allowing wildlife to take full advantage of these conditions. Seasonal changes like this play an important role in supporting feeding and nesting habitats along the shoreline and across the wider Lake Okeechobee ecosystem.
