Birds lift off and circle over the low water under partly cloudy skies, taking advantage of the exposed habitat across Lake Okeechobee. Lower water levels during the dry season on the lake open up shallow pools and mudflats, giving a variety of bird species more room to feed and move through the marsh. These seasonal conditions briefly turn Lake Okeechobee, one of the largest freshwater lakes in America, into a busy gathering place for wildlife across the open lake.
