Tests to support a feasibility study of the Pye Wacket, a lenticular-shaped air-to-air rocket, are conducted in the Gas Dynamics Facility of what was then known as Arnold Engineering Development Center in 1959. The decision to proceed with a Gas Dynamics Facility at AEDC was made by representatives of the Air Force, Navy, National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, the government’s Research Development Board and aircraft industry during a meeting in Washington, D.C., in early 1950. On Oct. 30, 1959, the Gas Dynamics Facility was dedicated as the von Kármán Gas Dynamics Facility in honor of mathematician, physicist and engineer Theodore von Kármán. Arnold Engineering Development Center is now known as Arnold Engineering Development Complex, headquartered at Arnold Air Force Base, Tenn. (U.S. Air Force photo)
