Historic brick masonry rests below the streets of Charleston, S.C. Part of this system includes brick arches that are an important component of stormwater conveyance and flood mitigation. However, the system is deteriorating. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Charleston District and the City of Charleston are working on rehabilitating the structures. Crews inspected some of the arches, April 15, 2026. (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers photo by Tom Conning)
