U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Alexander Canal, a combat photographer assigned to 4th Marine Regiment, 3d Marine Division, poses for a portrait after a hike to Combat Town during a Communication Strategy and Operations field training exercise at Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, April 8, 2026. The COMMSTRAT FTX is a five-day event focused on increasing acumen and tactical proficiency to provide commanders with capable COMMSTRAT forces at the tactical level.
“The hardest thing about today was, we do this entire hike and you get to the end, and you think okay at least that’s over now,” says Canal. “But then, you go back out there and put even more weight on as a surprise."
According to Canal, the hardest part of the hike itself was completing the hike without taking any breaks minus the required 10-minute break.
Marines conducted a 12-km hike followed by an additional short hike with added weight as a refresher on the importance of integrity. Participants also had a Marine Corps Martial Art Program event following the hike. During MCMAP, participants grappled and fought using pugil sticks as well as weapons of opportunity. Throughout all the events, participants captured imagery to submit products daily.
“The event I was looking forward to the most this week was MCMAP,” said Canal. “It’s always fun to compete against each other and see what we’re capable of.”
