U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. John Haubeil, a combat photographer assigned to 5th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Co., III Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group, recovers after completing an obstacle course during the Communication Strategy and Operations field training exercise at Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, April 6, 2026. The COMMSTRAT FTX is a five-day event when members assigned to different units come together to participate in a variety of field exercises. Marines and other members will capture imagery and make products on top of completing the field exercises. The first event was an obstacle course on Camp Hansen where participants completed the course in teams. Throughout the FTX, participants were graded and ranked after every event and product evaluation. The events to follow will include a rifle range, a 12-km hike, Marine Corps Martial Arts Program Training and simulated combat events. At the end of the FTX, one team with the highest points will receive a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. Haubeil expects the FTX to be harsh especially for those who are not properly prepared. “It’s supposed to simulate a real environment so I don't expect it to be fun or easy,” said Haubeil. “I will be expected to do my job and by God, that is what I will do.” (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Pfc.
