U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 2 Dylan Mesch, an aviation safety officer and pilot in command, inspects a U.S. Army CH-47 Chinook helicopter, assigned to 615th Aviation Support Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, assigned to Joint Task Force-Southern Border (JTF-SB), during preflight checks for an exfiltration mission near Sierra Vista, Ariz., April 2, 2026. The mission supported the extraction of Soldiers from the 1st Armored Division after completing foot patrols along the southern barrier under JTF-SB, providing additional manpower and resources to Customs and Border Protection personnel. U.S. Northern Command is working side-by-side with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection within narrowly defined authorities to provide unique military capabilities to protect the territorial integrity of the U.S. southern border.
