As new facilities add significant weight to the ground at a $115 million dollar project at Camp Humphreys, South Korea, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Far East District’s (USACE FED) Geotechnical Survey Team ensures the soil remains stable during an inspection on Dec. 23, 2025. Near the wash rack, they applied temporary loads (called surcharge) to test ground movement using a method known as preloading. This measures soil compression over time and is conducted across the project site to ensure a strong foundation. Data collected tells the team and contractor when the soil has stabilized, guides construction timelines, and helps identify solutions to address potential issues.
