ASSISI, Italy – A local tour guide provides information on some of the main sights to the 30 participants during the visit to Assisi on Feb. 28, 2026. U.S. Army Garrison Italy Vicenza Outdoor Recreation toured the hilly town of Assisi, which is renowned as the birthplace of St. Francis, Italy's patron saint, and UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.
In the background, is the Church of San Rufino, began in 1140, an imposing cathedral built in the Romanesque style on the same site where Bishop Rufinus who was martyred in the third century. The cathedral has played an important role in the history of the Franciscan Order. Within its walls, Saint Francis of Assisi (1182), Saint Clare (1193) and many of their early followers were baptized.
