A portable laser rangefinder designator (PLDR) sits in the supporting arms virtual trainer (SAVT) during a bilateral training exercise between the U.S. Marine Corps and the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force as part of Iron Fist 26 on Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, Feb. 23, 2026. The SAVT allows service members to train virtually in close air support scenarios, gain familiarization with equipment and execute procedures in a controlled environment. Iron Fist is an annual bilateral exercise designed to increase operational integration and strengthen the relationships between the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Navy, the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force, and the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force.
