U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Godfrey Rose, Recovery Team 3 sergeant, shovels soil from a unit during a recovery mission in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Feb. 7, 2026. Units are typically excavated with the scientific recovery expert carefully monitoring the excavation results to determine how far to dig. The soil is then transferred to screening stations where team members sift to find potential bone and life-support equipment.
