MONTEREY, Calif.–Pictured during graduation in June 2019 with then Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson, U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Zishan Hameed, along with his thesis partner U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Josh Gats, focused their thesis research on improving radiation detection. Their efforts to develop a micro-sensor capable of “smelling” thermal neutron irradiation is the foundation of their patent, awarded in 2024, leading to a low cost, low power, compact, reliable, and versatile detection capability.
