Wild rice (Manoomin) is a type of grass native to the Great Lakes region and parts of Canada. Though it has both male and female parts, it does not self-pollinate; wind is the primary pollinator, with insects and animals assisting when crops are sparse. Wild rice is culturally and economically important to Tribal nations in this region. The Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Wetlands Team is working with tribal collaborators to understand and improve wild rice (Manoomin) productivity.
