A tiny arachnid hangs off a sedge. Sedges have edges is a common refrain in plant identification, although a few happen to be round. The genus Carex , often called the “true sedges” is one of the largest genera in North America with approximately 480 species. A total of 232 Carex taxa (species, subspecies, varieties, and hybrids) have been documented in New York, requiring careful attention to arrive at the correct identification. Carex and other sedges are on the rapid assessment indicator species list. (U.S. Army Photo by Brigida I. Sanchez)
