U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Wetlands Teams develop rapid ecological assessments based on the needs and locations of our State, Federal, and local partners. In this case, the wetlands team collects data from multiple locations to build a thorough evaluation for the New York and Buffalo Districts for Civil Works Planning, Environmental, and other missions. Documenting invasive species is critical to that collection; invasive plants can impact the overall health of a habitat by outcompeting native species. Photographed here is Microstegium Vimineum, a highly invasive grass that is often transported by water or animals, including humans. It thrives in various habitats, such as floodplains, forests, fresh tidal marshes, meadows, fields, and the shores of rivers and lakes. (U.S. Army Photo by Brigida I. Sanchez)
