A historic photo of Douglas A. Munro with his shipmates aboard U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Spencer [WPG-36] during a New Year's celebration, Jan. 1, 1941. Munro was killed in action Sept. 27, 1942, after placing his Higgins boat as a shield for 500 Marines beleaguered by enemy gun fire on the beaches of Point Cruz, Guadalcanal, and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his leadership and service.
