Kevin Philley, a U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Wetlands Team research biologist, breaks open a stem of Symplocarpus foetidus, commonly known as Skunk cabbage. It is considered a wildflower and uses its garlic and onion-like smell to attract insects. Skunk Cabbage is an obligate wetland indicator species, almost always occurring in wetlands. ERDC's Wetlands Teams develop rapid ecological assessments, which are essential for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Districts to conduct Civil Works Planning, Environmental, and other missions.
