PANAMA CITY, Panama – U.S. Army Maj. John Cappiello, lead Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC) planner for PANAMAX-ALPHA, met with Frank Alexis Abrego, Panamanian Minister of Public Security, after the rehearsal drill to ask him about his time as a student at WHINSEC and how it shaped his career. Abrego shared that his year-long attendance at the Georgia-based institute helped expand his knowledge of how American forces train officers to think strategically, operationally and tactically.
Abrego served in the Panamanian National Police Force when he was a student at WHINSEC and graduated in 2006. His connection to the PANAMAX exercise and support elements are closely tied to his own professional career in law enforcement and security forces.
PANAMAX Alpha is an annual bilateral exercise between the Republic of Panama and the United States, organized through U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM). It serves as the preparatory phase for the larger biennial multilateral PANAMAX exercise, which focuses on protecting the Panama Canal and surrounding region. (Photo by U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr.
