A flexible research platform for collecting data from under, on, and above Monterey Bay, NPS’ current and future instruments can measure numerous oceanographic and meteorological parameters. The buoy operates an Automated Identification System (AIS) transponder for navigational safety, surface search radar, HD/IR camera, Starlink antenna, and AT&T 5G network, which is accessible to mariners. The buoy also includes a device from Stanford University’s Hopkins Marine Station for tracking tagged great white sharks and other marine species. (U.S. Navy photo by Dan Linehan)
