    U.S. Army Staff Sgt. William D. Owens, circa 1944, served as a paratrooper with the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. Owens was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross during a June 5, 2025, ceremony in Sainte-Mère-Église, France, for his actions during the D-Day landings at La Fière. The award was presented as part of the 81st anniversary of Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied France on June 6, 1944. (U.S. Army photo, courtesy of the Owens family)
