Gold Star Father Antonio Vazquez shakes hands with supporters after the Chicago Memorial Day parade on May 25 in downtown Chicago. Vazquez and other Gold Star Family members spent a little time reading the names of the fallen on Illinois' Gold Star Family float in the parade. Those names included Vazquez's son, Staff Sgt. Jason Vazquez who was killed in action while serving with the Illinois Army National Guard's 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team. Staff Sgt. Vazquez of Chicago assigned to the brigade's 2nd Battalion 122nd Field Artillery, when he was killed on Sept. 17, 2008, in Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device. Also killed was 1st Lt. Mohsin A. Naqvi, Capt. Bruce E. Hays and Sgt. Joshua W. Harris. Members of Veteran motorcycle clubs shielded the Illinois National Guard Gold Star Families from protestors at the funerals for their Soldiers during the brigade's 2008-2009 deployment.
