Gold Star Mother Sue Wieczorek hugs a friend after the Chicago Memorial Day parade on May 25 in downtown Chicago. Wieczorek and other Gold Star Family members spent a little time reading the names of the fallen on Illinois' Gold Star Family float in the parade. Those names included Wieczorek's son, Sgt. Robert Weinger, who killed in action while serving with the Illinois Army National Guard's 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team. Sgt. Weinger, 24, of Round Lake Beach, Ill.; was assigned to the brigade's 1st Battalion, 178th Infantry Regiment was killed March 15, 2009 in Afghanistan, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Also killed were Sgt. Christopher P. Abeyta and Spc. Normal L. Cain III. Members of Veteran motorcycle clubs shielded the Illinois National Guard Gold Star Families from protestors at the funerals for their Soldiers during the brigade's 2008-2009 deployment. .
