The match was held as part of the annual Norfolk NATO Festival, the longest running festival in the Hampton Roads region, and the only one of its kind in the United States which honors the NATO alliance and its member nations. Rugby diplomacy was announced as part of President Biden’s Pacific Island Forum Summit held last fall, where midshipmen from the USNA Rugby team travel to the Pacific Islands beginning in May for rugby exhibition matches and youth empowerment programming.
