The St. Louis District maintains a 9-foot shipping channel on the Upper Mississippi River by using locks and dams. A towboat pushing barges shoves into the 1200-foot lock chamber at the Melvin Price Locks and Dam in Alton, Illinois on March 22, 2024. One 15-barge tow can haul the same amount of grain as 1,050 semi-truck trailers or 216 rail cars.
