Resting on a sandbar just below the Melvin Price Locks and Dam in West Alton, Missouri, the American white pelican feed from the water's surface, dipping their 15-inch-long beaks into the water to catch fish and other aquatic organisms. American white pelicans come together in groups of a dozen or more birds to feed, as this helps them to corral fish to one another.
