GELA, Italy (July 10, 2023) - Sgt. 1st Class Jason Longoria recites final roll call of all 82nd Airborne Division service members who were killed in action at an Operation Husky 80th anniversary commemoration ceremony at 82nd Airborne Division Monument at Ponte Dirillo in Gela, Italy, July 10, 2023. Throughout July 2023, service members from Naval Air Station Sigonella attend various ceremonies around Sicily to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Operation Husky, also known as the Allied Invasion of Sicily, in which the Allied powers of WWII launched a massive amphibious assault on the shores of Sicily in order to take Sicily back from the Axis Powers. NAS Sigonella’s strategic location enables U.S. allied, and partner nation forces to deploy and respond as required to ensure security and stability in Europe, Africa and Central Command.
