Aircraft wreckage sits in a screen during a Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) recovery mission in Italy, June 23rd, 2023. During an excavation, a life support investigator (LSI) looks through any findings, along with a scientific recovery expert (SRE), in order to identify any possible material evidence, life support equipment, or possible human remains. This mission employed a 26-member recovery team searching for possible human remains from World War II, of which there are approximately 72,000 Americans unaccounted for.
