Dr. Clive Vella, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) Scientific Recovery expert (SRE), screens soil during a recovery mission in Italy, June 23, 2023. After determining what areas of the site would be excavated, Vella established a grid and oversaw the collection of potential human remains, life support equipment, and material evidence. Utilizing information provided from previous investigations, Vella aided a 26-member recovery team in the search for possible human remains from World War II, of which there are approximately 72,000 service members unaccounted for.
