Tech. Sgt. Erik Merrill, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) Life Support investigator (LSI), looks through possible life support equipment and other material evidence during a recovery mission in Italy, June 23, 2023. Once an LSI discovers life support equipment associated with a case, the equipment is sent back to DPAA headquarters and used, in conjunction with other lines of evidence, to make a possible identification. Merrill was part of a 26-member recovery team searching for possible human remains from World War II, of which there are approximately 72,000 service members unaccounted for.
