Meet 1st Lt Katie Heriot, Headquarters and Headquarters Company executive officer assigned to the 22nd Chemical Battalion, El Paso, Tx. She and her small team deployed to the port of Alexandroupoli, Greece to ensure the safe transport of her unit’s equipment in preparation of #DefenderEurope 23.
“I am here tracking our vehicle movements ensuring that all of the equipment comes in and moves through Romania and Bulgaria safely,” she explained. “There are only 12 of us, but we have a good team.”
Heriot and her team have been working closely with the Greek civilian port authority and Hellenic Army security personnel. Through their joint efforts, Heriot and her team have built professional relationships that will have a lasting effect.
“They have all been kind and helpful,” Heriot said. “They have been wanting to learn from us and we have been asking for lots of information as well.”
Heriot and her team have also learned some Greek phrases to help bridge the communication gap and to show their respect. “They taught us how to say ‘thank you’ and things like that. It’s been great,” she said.
