Vermont Army National Guard Hosts Best Warrior Competition

U.S. Army Sgt. Kristian Ashley, assigned to Bravo Company, 572nd Brigade Engineer Battalion, Vermont Army National Guard, uses a lensatic compass to shoot an azimuth before starting the land navigation portion of the Best Warrior Competition, held at the Ethan Allen Firing Range in Jericho, Vermont, April 1-2. The azimuth is the direction he needs to go to reach his plotted point on the map. Land navigation is a basic Soldier skill using a map and compass that offers advantages over GPS. A soldiers’ ability to read a topographical map enables them to understand terrain features they’ll encounter, plan a route, and better understand what equipment may be needed for troop movement.
