U.S. Army Sgt. Syed Abbas, assigned to Bravo Company, 172nd Law Enforcement Detachment, Vermont Army National Guard, plots his coordinates before starting the land navigation portion of the Best Warrior Competition, held at the Ethan Allen Firing Range in Jericho, Vermont, April 1-2. Land navigation is a basic Soldier skill using a map and compass that offers advantages over GPS. A soldiers’ ability to read a topographical map enables them to understand terrain features they’ll encounter, plan a route, and better understand what equipment may be needed for troop movement.
