U.S. Army Soldiers with the Vermont National Guard plot coordinates for the land navigation portion of the Best Warrior Competition, held at the Ethan Allen Firing Range in Jericho, Vermont, April 1-2. Land navigation is a basic Soldier skill using a map and compass that offers advantages over GPS. A soldiers’ ability to read a topographical map enables them to understand terrain features they’ll encounter, plan a route, and better understand what equipment may be needed for troop movements.
