    Army Medicine History

30 March is National Doctors Day. The oldest Corps in the AMEDD is the Medical Corps. Among the physicians who have served AMEDD in the past is Dr. David D. Hogan.

Dr. Hogan is from Wisconsin and received his medical degree in 1896. He enlisted in the Army as a private with the hospital corps and then as a Contract Surgeon during the Spanish-American War. Serving as a Contract Surgeon was not an unusual way for a physician to “join” the Army at that time. Dr. Hogan served as a Contract Surgeon both in the continental United States and overseas in Hawaii and the Philippine Islands. In July 1908 he was appointed as a First Lieutenant in the new Medical Reserve Corps. He attended the Army Medical School in 1914-1915 and was commissioned as a Regular Army Lieutenant upon graduation in May 1915. He was promoted to Captain on 5 October 1916 and to Lieutenant Colonel in 1935. He served only two years as a LTC before passing away in 1937.

This Undress Coat made for David Hogan in 1915 was worn while he served as a Major. It was made for him when he completed his studies at the Army Medical School. The two ribbons are for service during the Spanish Campaign and the Philippine Campaign. (MED 1688 A-F)
