A girl observes an enlarged model of a mosquito pupa in a magnifier at SciTech Days – Animals and Wildlife held at the Carnegie Science Center on Pittsburgh’s North Shore, February 17, 2023. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District uses magnifiers to teach the public how to identify macroinvertebrates, animals without backbones which can be seen with the naked eye and live in water. These organisms, such as dragonfly nymphs, caddisfly larvae and freshwater mussels, are a vital part of many food chains. They are sensitive to pollution and considered indicators of clean waterways. SciTech Days connects the public with real-world scientists, engineers, tradespeople, and other STEM professionals from local companies, organizations, and universities.
