Rachael Hopkins, a Historian with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District, explains how a visible hexagon beehive functions during SciTech Days – Animals and Wildlife held at the Carnegie Science Center on Pittsburgh’s North Shore, February 17, 2023. This device allows people to observe an active honeybee colony. It’s shape is the same as the cells which make up a hive, a hexagon. These strong six-sided structures can hold the queen bee’s eggs, store pollen and honey. SciTech Days connects the public with real-world scientists, engineers, tradespeople, and other STEM professionals from local companies, organizations, and universities.
