Mr. John Plaga and Mr. Mark Gruber from the SAFE Association Wright Brothers Chapter presented the award for 2021’s “Outstanding Program Team” to the Naval Medical Research Unit – Dayton’s Disorientation Research Device (Kraken) Program Team in front of the mighty Kraken on Feb. 22nd. The team consists of Mr. Cortland Etgen, Mr. Charles Powell, Mr. Jason Whatmore, Mr. Matt Lee, Mr. John Kloczkowski, Mr. Luke Warner, Mr. Tony Bailey, Mr. Kyle Kemp, Mr. Gary Labance, Mr. Adam Bowersock, Mr. Brendan Gallagher and CDR Bradley Fairfax. This award is for teams that have made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of a safety, survival or crew systems technology. There were three main aspects to this award focused on advancing the Kraken’s capabilities to support cutting edge aeromedical research: the extensive design, test, evaluation, control mastery and the safe implementation of the first RollHawk head on neck rotation apparatus; the design, integration, test and evaluation of the Kraken breathing system, and; the technical integration of an externally tracked virtually reality headset operating as a helmet mounted display surrogate into a complete human in the loop flight simulation environment into the Kraken capsule. CAPT Rich Folga, DRD Program Manager, noted that “These unique accomplishments would have not been possible without the entire DRD team operating as one entity.”
