The 1st Theater Sustainment Command Commanding General Maj. Gen. Michel M. Russell Sr. accompanied by Army Reserve Sgt. 1st Class Jerry Powell, examines a special housing unit, or SHU, cell for prisoners held in solitary confinement at the Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, Theater Confinement Facility during his visit Sept. 13, 2021. All prisoners spend their first 72 hours at the facility in a SHU as part of the acclimation process, and facility personnel may return a prisoner to live in a SHU based on the individual's conduct. If a prisoner needs to be moved from the facility, the SHUs have a palletized bottom to facilitate transportation.
