U.S. Naval Research Laboratory researchers from the Ocean and Atmospheric Science and Technology Directorate assigned to the Scientific Development Squadron (VXS) 1’s UV-18 Twin Otter depart Jan. 12 from Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md. to conduct airborne research in Homer, Alaska. The team’s objective is to determine ocean bubble fields using lidar. The Twin Otter has several sensors onboard, including the NRL lidar and camera, to measure the reflection of the laser and sun light by whitecaps and underwater bubble clouds.
