“My name is Jamie McDonagh and I am a firefighter here at Fort Carson. I am in the Army Reserves currently; I’ve been in the Reserves for six years. I used to be Active Duty for four years. I was an 89B, an ammunition specialist. I did that job for one month in my 10 years. I was stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. Most of the time I was in a transportation unit when I was Active Duty. I drove trucks. When I deployed I got to work with Infantry guys which was fun. It was a good experience.
I learned to keep on pushing, keep on going and stay motivated. Life can get hard.
I love the adrenaline of being a firefighter. We never know what call we’re going to get. It gives me purpose. Being a firefighter is similar to being in the service. It’s the same brotherhood, the same structure.
I feel like I’m a role model for my daughter as a Soldier and a firefighter. She looks up to me, I hope. She gives me motivation.”
