"My name is Shawn Terrell. I am from yhe small town of Michigan City, Indiana. Of my seven siblings, I was the first one to join the service. I went straight from the Great Lakes to Fort Jackson for basic training. I was assigned to Fort Sam Houston and then Fort Lewis.
Later I was the assistant training non-commissioned officer in charge here [at the Fort Carson field hospital]. I was here when we went from 68 beds to 240 beds. I went back to Fort Sam Houston and I was teaching there.
After a couple different deployments, I got out, and then I joined the Colorado National Guard. I was a field medic for 6 years and then I left that. I went to the Headquarters Medical Company up at Buckley Air Force Base and I did that for another six years. Then they saw I was a teacher and they sent me back here to do training for Warrant Officer School. I retired teaching from there.
Then I went and worked for a couple local laboratory companies. I did that for 5 years and I got tired of that. I had already retired, and I thought, 'Well, I'm not going to do anything else.' That's how I ended up at the Commissary.
Believe it or not, there are people I work with there who I've known over 30 years. I bet I can't go a day there without seeing someone I've known over the last 30 years. Somehow, we end up coming back to Carson. I go to work smiling and I leave smiling because I get to talk to people I otherwise wouldn't have seen. I love the feel of it.
The life skills and the camaraderie we come across here...we're one step ahead of the game. As a non-commissioned officer, that's what we did. We teach and train. That's what it's about. Growing. We learn every day."
