“I am Matthew Thompson and I am the owner/operator of 3D Offroad. I was a Specialist in the 63 S position, which is a heavy-wheeled mechanic, with a H8 qualifier that was recovery. My first duty station was at Fort Knox and then I went to Germany and was deployed to Bosnia. Then I came to Fort Carson. I got out in 2002 and I started my business about 10 years later.
My time in the service gave me a great starting spot to learn more about mechanics. Now I own an off-road and fabrication shop. We do full on engine swaps to taking something like these old Humvees and making them something someone wants to drive.
I learned responsibility. Back then, you were responsible for a lot. You were responsible for people and equipment, and you pass that on. You learn how to work with people and have camaraderie with different people and take that with you. You work with people all over the world and you learn to deal with that.
I am thankful for the people that I met and the knowledge I learned. That’s what I’m most thankful for. It’s life-changing.”
