U.S. Coast Guard Fireman Derrek Bost oils parts of an engine Dec. 30, 2019, aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star (WAGB-10) about 800 miles north of McMurdo Station, Antarctica. The Polar Star is equipped with nine diesel engines, which provide 75,000 horsepower to break ice near Antarctica. The crew of the Seattle-based Polar Star is on its way to Antarctica in support of Operation Deep Freeze 2019-2020, the U.S. military’s contribution to the National Science Foundation-managed U.S. Antarctic Program.
