150423-N-GI958-0001 NORFOLK (April 23, 2015) The Atlantic Fleet Training and Testing (AFTT) environmental planning team departs the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Gonzalez (DDG 66) after participating in an environmental impact statement kick-off meeting and tour of the ship to familiarize the team with naval ships, systems, sensors and training activities for the AFTT study area. In accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act, USFF is currently in the process of preparing an environmental impact statement to reassess the potential environmental impacts associated with conducting safe, yet realistic training for Sailors and testing systems within the AFTT study area, which consists of approximately 2.6 million square nautical miles of open waters and designated airspace over the Atlantic Ocean along the eastern coast of North America, portions of the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and in specific inland waters.
