Petty Officer 3rd Class Keyan Sullivan, a hospital corpsman with Alpha Company, Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, the “China Marines,” carries a plate of food during a “Steel Beach” atop the flight deck of the dock landing ship USS Ashland (LSD 48), Philippine Sea, March 2, 2019. Sullivan, a native of Warner Robins, Georgia, graduated from Veterans High School in May 2015 before enlisting the same month. Alpha Company Marines are the small boat raid specialists for BLT 1/4, the Ground Combat Element for the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. The “Steel Beach” was an opportunity for the Marines and Sailors of the 31st MEU and the crew of the Ashland to build camaraderie and take a breather during operations. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU partnering with the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group provides a flexible and lethal force ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premier crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region.
