Marines and Sailors with Alpha Company, Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, the “China Marines,” and Combat Logistics Battalion 31, serve food during a “Steel Beach” atop the flight deck of the dock landing ship USS Ashland (LSD 48), Philippine Sea, March 2, 2019. Alpha Company Marines are the small boat raid specialists for BLT 1/4, the Ground Combat Element for the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. CLB-31 provides security, logistics, and transportation as the Logistics Combat Element for the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. The “Steel Beach” was an opportunity for the Marines and Sailors of the 31st MEU and the crew of the Ashland to build camaraderie and take a breather during operations. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU partnering with the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group provides a flexible and lethal force ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premier crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region.
