“My mom definitely was a huge impact. She was a go-getter when she was young, so she tried to instill that in me because I was lazy in school. I just skated by, but she told me, ‘Don’t settle - there’s always something more. I don’t want you to stay in Philly because it’s too dangerous out here.’ She was actually in the Army as some type of medic. She was a surgeon’s assistant at one point, so she can name all of the tools in the operating room. And she was delivering babies and stuff like that, and I’m like, ‘Wow.’ So she encouraged me to join the military, and that’s what I went with. I wasn’t lazy enough to not join.”
- Airman 1st Class Shawn Reid, 375th Comptroller Squadron special actions technician
