    31st Marine Expeditionary Unit

Lance Cpl. Alex Catarroja, an intelligence specialist with Headquarters and Support Company, Battalion Landing Team, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, watches Marine Corps Martial Arts Program training inside the hangar bay aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1), underway in the Pacific Ocean, Sept. 6, 2018. Catarroja, a native of South San Francisco, California, graduated from El Camino High School in May 2016 before enlisting in December the same year. MCMAP is a hand-to-hand defense program that all Marines learn during their career – Marines, and Sailors assigned to Marine Corps units, earn different colored belts to denote proficiency with martial arts. BLT 2/5 is the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit’s Ground Combat Element. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible force ready to perform a wide-range of military operations across the Indo-Pacific region.
